Yonkers native Sheppard Adeghe, 33, has been sentenced to 20 years in state prison for manslaughter in the shooting death of Elias Flores in 2016. He had faced life in prison on a murder charge before his guilty plea.

At approximately 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2016,  a car drove into the emergency room area at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers, where a 19-year-old was dropped off, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Within an hour of being dropped off, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

According to an autopsy performed by the medical examiner, the cause of death was a single gunshot wound that passed through the victim’s arm, entering his chest. Detectives launched an investigation and tracked down the car that transported the victim, which had blood stains in the back seat.

Two days after the shooting, Adeghe applied for and was issued an emergency United States passport. Later that day, he boarded an international flight to Amsterdam, then the Netherlands, before finally landing in Edinburgh, Scotland.

During the investigation, police said that they obtained information leading to the identification of Adeghe, which placed him on Poplar Street at the same time the victim was shot and just before he arrived at the hospital. On Aug. 26, 2016, police received a tip that Adeghe was in Scotland, and days later police executed a federal warrant and detained him.

Extradition proceedings were then commenced, resulting in Adeghe’s return to the United States, with an assist from the FBI. Adeghe has been charged with felony counts of second-degree murder and criminal possession of a weapon.

“This case demonstrates how the collective efforts of the law enforcement community can be successful in bringing violent individuals to justice and in keeping our communities safe,” Yonkers Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said at the time of Adeghe's arrest. “It should also serve as a warning to those who choose to commit violent crimes in Yonkers.

“We will utilize every resource available to hunt you down and hold you accountable for your action, no matter how far you run.”
